Love That Cozy Rural Home? Picture an Ordinary Winter Wednesday
A country home can look especially inviting in the fall. There is a little smoke above the chimney, gold and red among the trees, and a quiet that makes you want to stay awhile. I understand the appeal. I lived off-grid for about ten years, and I have personally built nine homes. Rural living is something I know from the inside. When a buyer falls in love with that setting, I want to help them picture an ordinary winter Tuesday. You need to leave for an appointment. There has been snow overnight. You have groceries to bring in later, and the house still needs to stay comfortable while you are gone. How does that day work at this property? Here are a few questions I would want us to explore:
Who maintains the road, and who handles the driveway?
Where does the plowed snow go?
What heats the home, and what does that system require from the owner?
What happens to the heat and water when the power goes out?
Where are fuel, firewood, and equipment stored?
Does the internet or cell service work for your needs at the house?
A pretty setting is a wonderful place to start. Understanding the daily routine helps you decide whether you will enjoy living there. Some buyers love tending a woodstove and managing their own systems. Others want to turn a thermostat and head out the door. Both are reasonable preferences. My job is to help you ask the questions before moving day. What part of country living would you most want to understand before buying?
