Words of Wisdom from Lessons Learned the Hard WayThere are times in life when we can see the warning signs long before the storm hits. We try to share what we\u2019ve learned. We offer experience, concern, or gentle guidance \u2014 only to realize our words are landing on deaf ears. It doesn\u2019t matter if it is a child, family, client or friend.\u00a0 It can feel a bit like watching a train wreck in slow motion, powerless to stop what we can clearly see coming.And sometimes, the person we fail to guide\u2026 is ourselves.There are moments when we say yes even though everything inside us whispered (Or maybe yelled) NO. We take on burdens that were never ours to carry. We step into someone else\u2019s struggle thinking we can help, rescue, fix, or soften the blow \u2014 and before long, we find ourselves standing in the rubble wondering why we didn\u2019t listen to that quiet inner voice.It\u2019s easy to be hard on ourselves in those moments.We shake our heads.We replay decisions.We ask, \u201cHow could I have been so foolish?\u201dBut here\u2019s the truth:Those choices didn\u2019t come from ignorance.They didn\u2019t come from weakness.They came from the heart.They were born out of compassion, loyalty, hope, and the desire to see someone else do better \u2014 maybe even better than they were willing to try for themselves.Wisdom, however, comes from experience \u2014 especially the painful kind. Over time we learn that:\u2022 We cannot save people who don\u2019t want to be saved.\u2022 We cannot force readiness that isn\u2019t there.\u2022 We cannot rewrite someone else\u2019s life path.\u2022 And we are not required to sacrifice our peace to prove our kindness.Boundaries don\u2019t make us cold.They make us healthy.Saying \u201cno\u201d doesn\u2019t make us unkind.It makes us honest.And stepping back doesn\u2019t mean we don\u2019t care.It means we finally learned to care for ourselves, too.So instead of beating ourselves up for the times we overgave, overextended, or ignored the voice of wisdom inside us \u2014 maybe we simply acknowledge:We were doing the best we could with the heart and compassion we had to give.\u00a0 And sometimes no matter how much we want to we can\u2019t stop the train wreck.\u00a0\u00a0Rain Silverhawk\n
