My \u201cAha\u201d Moment \u2014 The Land That Changed My Life (and My Career)When I was young, I bought a piece of land in Northern California that, at the time, felt like a dream come true.It was snowing the day we first went to see it. We were running late to meet the seller, and the last mile of road wasn\u2019t plowed \u2014 so I carried my two-year-old on my shoulders and walked in through the snow. And even with frozen toes and a tired toddler, I absolutely fell in love.The land was breathtaking.Thirteen private acres.Towering trees.Quiet forest all around.An outstand view of Mount Shasta rising in the distance.There was a creek nearby, no neighbors in sight, and the property bordered a large Native American reservation. I imagined peace. Simplicity. Space to breathe. A little slice of wilderness to build a future on.I was told the road was normally well-maintained when residents were living there. Electric service was \u201cnearby.\u201d Water wasn\u2019t expected to be an issue. And the price? Affordable \u2014 especially on a land contract, where the seller carried the financing and the taxes stayed in their name.It sounded perfect.So I bought it.And then\u2026 reality arrived.A few months later, once winter faded, I discovered the truth.The seven miles of road leading in were riddled with potholes, wasnt normally plowed and that last mile? It turned into a deep mud full of car size trenches whenever it rained or snowed. The \u201cnearby electric\u201d couldn\u2019t legally be extended from the reservation \u2014 service would have to come from seven miles away. Wells in the area were more than 800 feet deep. Water hauling became a way of life. And the \u201ccreek on the property\u201d? It turned out the parcel didn\u2019t actually extend that far.Then one day a young couple drove in.They had bought the same property \u2014 also on payments \u2014 also on a land contract.And they weren\u2019t the first in the end we found 4 others that thought they owned this same parcel. The property had been sold multiple times, layered in paper trails and confusion. Everyone received restitution \u2014 and ultimately, I ended up with the legal ownership of the land \u2014 but the emotional toll and financial stress were enormous.That experience became my aha moment.I realized how vulnerable people can be when buying real estate \u2014 especially land, especially rural, especially when you don\u2019t yet know what questions to ask or what red flags to watch for.And I knew, deep down:No one should ever go through that.So I made a decision that changed the course of my life.I went into real estate.Not for sales.Not for numbers.Not for awards.But to protect people.To educate them.To be the person I wish I\u2019d had in my corner back then.Today, decades later, that experience still shapes who I am as a broker. I look deeper. I ask harder questions. I verify. I protect.
