And that flexibility gave a lot of people the freedom to move \u2014 and work \u2014 from wherever they wanted.<\/p>\n<p>But now, a growing number of companies are requiring employees to return to the office. And that\u2019s leading some people to make decisions about where they live and if they need to move.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How Return-to-Work Policies Are Impacting Housing <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>During the rise of remote work, a lot of employees took the opportunity to move away from expensive or crowded city centers. Some opted for suburban neighborhoods and larger homes with yards, while others relocated to more rural areas. But lately, more people are returning to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplifyingthemarket.com\/2025\/02\/19\/the-return-to-urban-living-why-more-people-are-moving-back-to-cities\/?a=783612-02a11606fc81d6a6e402d49bc5bfe20b\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the city<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And according to <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/brightmls.com\/article\/work-vs-home\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>data<\/strong><\/a><strong> from <em>Bright MLS,<\/em><\/strong><em> <\/em><strong>more than half of workers surveyed would have to rethink where they live or deal with long drive times if their job enforced a return-to-office policy (<em>see chart below<\/em>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sandpointrealtyidaho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250306-Would-you-have-to-move-if-you-were-called-back-to-the-office-original.png?ssl=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sandpointrealtyidaho.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/20250306-Would-you-have-to-move-if-you-were-called-back-to-the-office-original.png?w=1220&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"a pie chart with text on it with Crust in the background\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a>And maybe you\u2019re one of them. If you moved farther out of the city during the work-from-home era, you may be facing a longer commute that you never expected to make daily. Once you\u2019ve done it a few times, you might find it\u2019s something you can get used to and isn\u2019t as bad as you may have thought.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes, it\u2019s just too hard to make it work \u2014 no matter how much you try. A drive or train ride that seemed fine once or twice a week can feel like too much of a grind five days in a row. It may also cost too much to commute so often, take too long, or cut too far into your free time. As Lisa Sturtevant, Chief Economist at <em>Bright MLS,<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/brightmls.com\/article\/work-vs-home\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cDuring the pandemic, when remote work became the norm, homebuyers were able to move farther out . . . <\/em><strong><em>But workers do not have the same flexibility that they used to, and some are going to have to make a tough choice if and when their employer calls them back into the office full-time.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you\u2019re thinking you may want to move, don\u2019t stress.
