Setbacks are a part of life. The\nnext time you\u2019re facing a setback, here are a few stories about people who used\na setback as a set-up for a comeback: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucille\nBall:\u00a0<\/strong>She\nbegan studying to become an actress in 1927 and was told by the head instructor\nof the John Murray Anderson Drama School, \u201cTry any other profession. *Any<\/em> other profession.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n*
Clint\nEastwood and Burt Reynolds: <\/strong>In 1959, a Universal Pictures executive\ndismissed them at the same meeting with the following statements. To Burt\nReynolds: \u201cYou have no talent.\u201d To Clint Eastwood: \u201cYou have a chip on your\ntooth, your Adam\u2019s apple sticks out too far, and you talk too slow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alexander\nGraham Bell: \u00a0<\/strong>When he invented the telephone in 1876, it didn\u2019t ring off\nthe hook with calls from potential backers. After making a demonstration call,\nPresident Rutherford Hayes said, \u201cThat\u2019s an amazing invention, but who would\never want to use one of them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chester\nCarlson: \u00a0<\/strong>In\nthe 1940\u2019s, this young inventor took his idea to 20 corporations, including\nsome of the biggest in the country. They all turned him down. In 1947 \u2013 after\nseven long years of rejections \u2013 he finally got a tiny company in Rochester,\nNY, the Haloid Company, to purchase the rights to his electrostatic\npaper-copying process. Haloid became Xerox corporation, and both it and Carlson\nbecame very rich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
**Abraham\nLincoln: \u00a0<\/strong>He\nentered the Blackhawk War (1831-1832) as a captain. By the end of the war, he\nhad been demoted to the rank of private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n**
J.K.\nRowling:\u00a0<\/strong>Author\nof the Harry Potter<\/em>\nseries, Joanne was an aspiring writer and single mother living on welfare with\nher young daughter in an unheated, mice-infested flat. Her first book was\nrejected by 12 publishers before the world met Harry Potter in 1997. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then there was the young man who\nsubmitted a paper to his Yale University management professor and got this\nresponse: \u201cThe concept is interesting and well-formed, but in order to earn\nbetter than a \u2018C,\u2019 the idea must be feasible.\u201d The young man was Fred Smith,\nhis paper proposed reliable overnight delivery service, and Fred went on to\nfound FedEx Corp.\n
